Our ability to receive and take on board constructive criticism has been the most crucial skill that we all have to make an effort to master. After a decade in leadership development and coaching leaders to build their ability to receive feedback constructively, whilst reading the Fall 2018 HBR Magazine, the article on ‘The right way to receive feedback ‘ by Sheila Hein and Douglas Stone, switched the light on for me. What would it look Iike to see criticism as a coaching opportunity? In other words, how to coach myself on the situation that I’m being criticized for. Coaching myself would mean exploring what the positive outcome would look like if the situation I’m criticized for were resolved. Once I figure out what success would look like, then I can most definitely work out the steps that would lead me to that success.
